Moving House Checklist for the UK: What to Do and When

Moving home is easier when the jobs are spread over several weeks instead of crammed into the last weekend. This checklist breaks a UK house move into stages so you always know what comes next.

Six to eight weeks before you move

Start with the decisions that take the longest.

  • Set your budget. Include removals, packing materials, storage if you need it, and cleaning at the old property.
  • Compare removal quotes. Ask for several quotes from verified, insured companies and compare what each includes. You can get free removal quotes in a few minutes.
  • Check your tenancy or contract dates so your move date matches your keys and completion.
  • Start decluttering. Anything you don't take costs nothing to move.

Four weeks before

  • Book your removal company once you have chosen a quote, and confirm the date in writing.
  • Order packing materials or book a packing service if you would rather not do it yourself.
  • Arrange storage if there is a gap between moving out and moving in. See our guide to storage solutions.
  • Tell people you are moving: your bank, employer, doctor, dentist, insurers and the DVLA.

Two weeks before

  • Redirect your post with Royal Mail so letters follow you.
  • Book parking or a parking suspension outside both properties if the street is busy. Your local council can advise.
  • Arrange broadband, energy and water at the new address.
  • Start packing rooms you rarely use. Label every box with the room and a short description.

The week of the move

  • Defrost the freezer and empty the fridge a day ahead.
  • Pack an essentials box: kettle, mugs, toiletries, chargers, medication and important documents.
  • Take meter readings at both properties and photograph them.
  • Confirm timings with your removal company and give them a contact number for the day.

Moving day

  1. Do a final walk-through of every room, cupboard and the loft.
  2. Check that the removal team has the right addresses and any access notes, such as parking or lifts.
  3. Keep keys, documents and valuables with you rather than on the van.
  4. Photograph the empty property and hand over keys as agreed.

After you move

  • Unpack the essentials box and the bedrooms first.
  • Update your address with any remaining organisations.
  • Check items against your inventory and report any damage to your removal company promptly.

If you want a hand with any part of the move, from house removals to a quick man and van, Ecoplus can match you with verified companies near you.
